Tips On Sewing A Duvet Cover

Martha Stewart took the fear way from home decorating years ago and created an entirely new generation of women who are not afraid and sew and create. This being said, there are many women today who want to sew a duvet cover. To sew a duvet cover you really do not need to be a master seamstress, although you should have a little knowledge in sewing and an idea of what a duvet cover should look like. Use these tips when considering sewing your own duvet cover.

Equipment Needed

Although many will tell you that it is possible to sew a duvet cover with a needle and thread, it is quite a job. To make this task much easier, you will need a sewing machine. Sewing with a sewing machine is not for the weak. It is for those who want to maximize the time in their daily schedule. Not only does it save time, but it also allows you to create clean sewing lines that are stronger than those normally sewed by hand. Another thing you will need is a pair of ultra sharp scissors, a measuring tape, coordinating colored thread, and closures. With all of these tools in your possession, you will on your way to creating your lovely duvet cover.

Measurement

Measuring for your duvet cover is pretty important. It is often good to measure several times, to ensure you are getting the right measurement. Write the measurement down immediately for both the length and width. If you are unsure about measuring, simply lay your comforter flat on the floor and stretch it out. Then measure each side. Add about an inch to each measurement and that is your duvet measurement. If you like your duvet to fit a bit looser, add two inches. This is also helpful if you think your material might shrink when washed.

Fabric

Choosing a fabric for your duvet cover is the fun part. Choose something you think feels nice as well as goes well with your bedroom décor. If it looks good, but feels bad, you probably won’t enjoy it as much. Use material that is not too thin, yet not too thick. Middle thickness is what you are going for. Make sure it is also washable and you will find it easier to deal with when cleaning.

Closures

Closures are another important decision in duvet cover making. You need to decide whether you would like to close your duvet with buttons, a zipper, or Velcro. For a classic look, try buttons. If you want the duvet to look as complete as possible, you may want to use a zipper. It will completely hide the comforter. Velcro is good, but might catch stray hairs or threads, so you may want to use this only as a last option. All three hold well however and can look great.

When choosing to sew a duvet cover, you certainly need to be prepared. The task is not difficult if you have the right materials and design idea. However, if you don’t think it through, it can end up disastrous. So, use these tips and your idea to sew a duvet cover will be a success.
