Goose Down Comforters: Adding a Little Luxury to Your Life

If you intend to buy a new comforter this winter season, a goose down comforter is your best bet in bedding. Goose down is incredibly warm, lightweight and breathable, which makes it the perfect material to snuggle up to on a cold night. The benefits of goose down include its luxurious softness to durability. Furthermore, there is a large variety of goose down, so whatever your preferences and budget, there is a goose down comforter for you.

Down refers to the layer that grows underneath the feathers of the goose. It is highly insulating and keeps geese warm even in the coldest water. Down is incredibly soft and fluffy; if you’ve ever sunk your head into a down pillow, then you know just how comfortable it is.

Down is derived from both ducks and geese, but goose down is thicker and grows in bigger clumps than duck. Furthermore, duck down emits a slight odor, whereas goose down has virtually no smell. For these reasons, if you are planning on buying a down comforter, goose down is the best choice. It will offer a softer, more comfortable sleep, which translates into higher satisfaction in the long run. A down comforter is an investment for your home. Make sure your investment is a quality one!

As mention above, there is a large variety of goose down comforters to choose from. If allergies are a concern, hypoallergenic goose down (often referred to as hypo-down) is available. Oftentimes companies will mix the down with a hypoallergenic material such as milkweed. When shopping for hypo-down, simply ask your sales representative which type would be best for you.

Another consideration is the quality of goose down comforter that you choose; low end goose down is less costly because it generally has more feathers mixed in. While it is virtually impossible to remove all of the feathers from the down, in general, the less money that you spend, the more feathers you will get. The drawback of buying a cheaper comforter is that goose quills can be very sharp and may cause you occasional discomfort. If budget constrains warrant this type of consideration, make sure that you test out the type of comforter you are going to buy. If it feels life half of the material is feathers, don’t buy it! You can do better.

High end goose down comforters offer the most amount of down and often a better type of down than some low end choices. Siberian goose is considered the best for its amazing thermal properties. This is, of course, reflected in its price. Hungarian goose is another type of high quality down that you can choose from. Whether or not budget is a constraint, the best decision that you can make when looking to buy is to shop around. You can look online, but a retailer can offer you expertise and advice.

After you have purchased your goose down comforter, caring for it is a must. It is recommended that you fluff your comforter daily (or at least several times a week) to avoid clumps from forming. Every now and then you should take your comforter outside to get some air. Down can become stuffy if left inside too long. Always protect your down comforter with a duvet to avoid stains and tears. You will not need to clean it often, most likely once every few years. When you do get it cleaned, go professional. You don’t want to risk the damage.

A goose down comforter is a quality investment for your home. Your new comforter will offer you years of warmth, softness and comfort that cannot be matched by any other type of bedding. So buy a goose down comforter this season and add a little luxury to your life.
