Goose Down Comforters
Goose Down Comforters: Warmth from Yesterday, Methods of Today
A Goose down comforter evokes images of winter nights
and four poster farm-house beds full of apple-cheeked
children, cuddled together. Down comforters were
certainly a necessity in the past, when homes were
heated less efficiently by fireplaces and wood and coal
stoves.
Down comforters still remain popular ways to keep warm.
They are now available in sturdy materials and can also
be hypoallergenic. Health and sleep experts extol the
benefits of sleeping in a cooler room. A goose down
comforter can allow a sleeper to turn down thermostat
and crawl under a warm quilt! It can a person with
allergies a break from breathing in force-air heating
dust while they sleep! A light and fluffy goose down
comforter can replace layers of blankets and bulky
sleep-wear!
Why Goose Down?
Gooses down comforters do cost a bit more but they rival
other materials in warmth and comfort. Geese have
special down, which is a fluffy and thick layer on the
underside of their bodies. This protects them against
the coldest weather! Goose down is also odor-free,
unlike duck feathers. So gooses down quilts are
lightweight, incredibly warm and they do not have that
odd “bird” smell to them
There are variations among goose down comforters. There
are less expensive comforters available, stuffed with a
mixture of goose feathers and down. The addition of
feathers in the mix results in a heavier, firmer quilt.
Goose feathers are sharp and may poke through the
fabrics. It is not possible to completely separate the
feathers from the down. The less feather in the mix
results in a better quality, and more expensive quilt.
Different breeds of geese also produce varying qualities
of down and feathers. Siberian Goose down is the most
coveted and is considered the highest quality material
for stuffing a quilt due to its wonderful thermal
qualities. These comforters are little heavier but they
last longer. This makes them a good investment in both
warmth and longevity!
Allergies: Nothing To Sneeze At!
There are viable options for those who are usually
allergic to down comforters. They are not allergic to
the down itself, but rather the dust mites and particles
that build up within them. Modern technology has created
hypoallergenic versions of goose down, called Hypdown.
This is a mixture of goose down and milkweed.
So a Goose Down Comforters is the Best: What Else do I
Need to Know?
Other factors determine the price and quality of your
goose down comforter. The thread count of the fabric is
very important. This refers to the number of threads
that make up one square inch of fabric. A high thread
counts makes the fabric softer and lighter as they
prevent the leakage of air out of the quilt. It will
also prevent the down and feathers from poking through.
There are many considerations before you buy your goose
down comforter. How warm do you want to be when you
sleep? How much can I afford to pay? What size is best
to fit my bed? Can I afford the dry-cleaning? However,
your goose down comforter is an excellent investment
both from a health prospective and money prospective.
The money you put out on your goose down comforter will
probably be returned by reduced heating bills!
