Bed Duvet Covers
Guide To Bed Duvet Covers
Bed duvet covers are an excellent way to preserve the
life of your comforter, especially delicate comforters
made from materials like wool, satin, and silk.
Essentially, bed duvet covers are an envelope of fabric
designed to secure your comforter and enhance your
decor. ‘Duvet’, the French word for ‘down’, originated
in Europe and described products made of Eider, a form
of duck’s down.
In France, Eider was considered the best product to use
for padding purposes. Feathers were used as well. Today,
however, it isn’t unusual to see duvet covers that are
somewhat different from the originals and filled with
wool or artificial fibers.
Primarily used for keeping warm, a duvet bed cover
eliminates all the fuss of making a bed with several
sheets as is the case when one chooses a variety of
sheets, blankets, and quilts etc. to fight the cold.
With a bed duvet cover, you may simply use a single
cover and keep yourself warm. A bed duvet cover does
more than just protect your comforter from wear and
tear; it provides ‘the eye of the storm’ to your bedroom
decor, a focus and a center that defines everything else
in the room.
Duvet covers are available in an array of fabrics,
colors, and patterns. Your fabric options include satin,
cotton, silk, and velvet.
Satin duvets - Satin duvets are made of high quality,
tightly woven satin that will give a classy air to any
bedroom. For convenience of removal, choose one with
buttons, Velcro, or zippers.
Silk duvets - Silk duvets are popular because they are
lightweight and versatile enough to be used in both hot
and cold weather. Pure silk is naturally hypoallergenic,
a plus for those sensitive to allergens.
Cotton duvets - Cotton bed duvet covers are also an
excellent choice. They are available in every color and
print imaginable and are easy to clean.
Velvet duvets - A velvet duvet is a majestic addition to
any bedroom, as its texture is fit for a queen and king.
Many come complete with gorgeous tassels and trimmings.
And as befits everything royal, velvet bed duvet covers
require nothing less than dry cleaning.
Although duvet covers bear the brunt of damage that
would usually affect the comforter, duvets should be
treated with as much care as possible. This means that
you should take your duvet cover to be laundered
seasonally - or whenever it gets dirty. There are,
however, some duvet covers that you can wash in your own
washing machine and air dry under the sun. For home
laundering, choose one made of polyester or cotton.
Factors to take into consideration before purchasing
your bed duvet covers include:
• Find the correct size duvet cover to match your bed
size. Sizes include king, queen, California King, and
twin. You should also decide ahead of time if the
comforter will be needed for warmth during cold months
or simply to keep you cool but comforted during the
warmer months. Let this determination guide you toward a
lightweight or heavier duvet cover or, perhaps, one that
is versatile and adaptable to all climates.
• Since down is the predominant material used in most
duvet covers, take care if you are susceptible to
allergies.
• Synthetic fibers are non-hypoallergenic.
