Allergy Bedding

Allergy Bedding: Part of a Good Night’s Rest

People with allergies often face difficulties as they sleep. They must spend at least eight hours, in close proximity with their pillow, mattresses and bedding. If these items contain allergens and irritants, they will wake up with allergic symptom or they will not enjoy a proper rest if they are awakened by their allergies. However, this can be addressed by the uses of proper allergy bedding.

What is Allergy Bedding?

There are two aspects to allergy bedding. People need to choose pillows, sheets and comforters that are made with hypoallergenic materials. There are several choices: washable synthetic fibers, hypoallergenic goose down, wool or silk quilts and pillows.

Hypoallergenic Bedding Covers are the other part of allergy bedding. They provide washable barriers to allergens and dust mites. Dust mites exist all around, at any season of the year. Even the most immaculate housekeepers cannot get rid of them. Dust mites love the bedroom, with all its fabrics. Since they are microscopic, they can easily slide though any standard fabrics, leaving allergy triggers as they pass.

One easy defense against these invisible invaders is the use of special allergy bedding encasings. These come in various high quality and machine washable materials. Special covers can be purchased for mattresses, pillow and comforters.

Good quality allergy bedding encasings will allow air and moisture to flow through the material. However it has an extremely tiny pore size, so that it blocks dust mites and the associated allergens.

Allergy Bedding Materials

Allergy bedding materials are usually synthetics or synthetics combined with small amounts of cotton. They normally include a “membrane” or a thin lining of plastic laminate. There are a number of high-tech materials now available for allergy barriers, including some materials that are so tightly woven that they can include higher cotton content.

Poly-Knit is soft, flexible polyester knit. Unlike typical polyester, it “breathes” through minute vents in the fabric. It stretches easily and makes an ideal mattress cover.

Poly-Cotton is a fifty-fifty blend of poly-knit and cotton. It is durable but the cotton makes the covers more absorbent. Micro-fiber is a nylon and polyester blend. It has such a fine weave that dust mites cannot penetrate it so no other barrier such as a plastic membrane, is required. This fabric is only available for pillow and duvet covers.

Allersoft is a new cotton-polyester micro-woven fabric. It is soft and the weave is so tight that it is effective on its own, without a membrane, to keep out mites and allergens. It contains an amazing ratio of forty percent cotton and is light and comfortable as bedding.

Care of Allergy Bedding

The choice of proper allergy bedding and barriers is only one aspect of an allergy reduced sleep. The bedding must be cared for and kept clean.

All allergy bedding barriers and linens should be washed in hot water every ten to fourteen days. There are also special laundry products available designed to destroy mites. Mattress covers should be washed at least four times a year.

The bedroom environment needs to be kept very clean, dust-free and free of any clutter or objects that attract mites. Allergic people should bathe or shower before bed, to remove any allergens from their bodies that may find their way into the bedding materials.

A combination of cleanliness and good allergy bedding products will go along way to ensure a sneezeless-sleep and an alert awakening!
