Buying A Down Comforter
The Basics of Buying a Down Comforter
Don’t be down because cold weather is just right around
the corner. There is no need to turn the thermostat down
and shiver all night long to save a few pennies on your
electric bill either. By learning the basics of buying a
down comforter, you could be warm and comfy in no time.
Numerous choices are available and come in various
styles, depending on your budget. Buying a down
comforter can be easy, as long as you do your homework.
The low down #1 – Buying a down comforter in the “off”
season will save you a few bucks. Do not wait until
winter comes and temperatures fall. It is the simple
principle of supply and demand. The lower temperatures
fall, the higher the price is for buying a down
comforter. Expect prices to be as much as fifty percent
higher “in” season.
The low down #2 – Not all down comforters are created
equal. When buying a down comforter, remember that the
higher quality down comes from geese raised in Europe.
The colder weather conditions that geese live in over
there help produce fluffier, warmer down feathers.
Also note, when buying a down comforter, check the
manufacturer’s tag. As much as seventy to eighty percent
could be filler products. This bedding only needs to
consist of twenty percent down feathers to be called a
down comforter.
The percentage of feathers is a big factor when buying a
down comforter, but it should not be the only factor
considered. Inspect the materials used in the comforter.
Thread counts should be a minimum of two hundred. The
highest thread count you can afford when buying a down
comforter is best. A higher thread counts also means a
tighter weave which keeps feathers from “sticking” you
in your sleep through the material. To keep the feathers
distributed evenly throughout, the comforter should have
box stitching. This will keep the feathers from bunching
up.
The low down #3 – The down feathers go through a special
cleaning procedure before being used in bedding. People
who are allergic to dust mites might blame the down
feathers for their allergies, but typically it is the
material itself that causes problems. One way to combat
that problem is to look for a slipcover while buying a
down comforter. This way, the dead skin cells and dust
mites that accumulate when you use the bedding will be
on the slipcover. You can then just whip off the cover
and wash it.
Another factor to consider is the maintenance of the
bedding. Down comforters should be cleaned every four
years or so by a professional service. You should also
shake them out every day to redistribute the down
feathers.
When buying a down comforter for your bed, be prepared
to fall asleep almost as soon as your head hits the
pillow. It is so comfortable and soft. The down
comforter will keep your body heat from escaping. It
will not be too long before you are ready to call it a
night.
