Teen Comforter Set

Turning Teen Angst into Teen Style

The teen years are filled with anxiety, rebellion and identity crisis. When you live with a teen it may seem like you like in the middle of a soap opera and that your teen is playing more than one character. With all the extra energy going into to exploring their identities most teens can use a creative outlet. Why not channel them into exploring their identity through style by having them shop for their own teen comforter set? Avoid chaos and clashing tempers by using some of the following tips for linen shopping with a teen:

1. Set a budget before you leave the house. There is nothing like going to the store and finding that perfect set only to find out that it costs way more than you planned on spending. Since you initiated the shopping trip with your teen they may rebel when told that they are not allowed to have a particular set. If you discuss budgeting with your teen before you leave the house how much you are willing to spend it should prevent any on-the-spot arguments about price. If your teen really loves a certain comforter set then they may be willing to pitch in some cash of their own.

2. Discuss your decorating expectations. If you have anything that you believe you just will not be able to live with in their room, state it upfront. If you decide to re-do the whole room and not just the bed linens, discuss what you are willing to compromise about and what is a deal breaker. If dark paint is off limits, make that clear.

3. Be flexible. Ok, so maybe your idea of style isn’t a Hawaiian print comforter and fake grass hanging from the door, but it could be a small price to pay for supporting your teen’s self-expression. If the Goth look is more your teen’s taste but you refuse to paint the walls black, maybe compromise with a black comforter set for your teen and some interesting black and white prints for the walls. Remember that you can negotiate and compromise without losing authority.

4. Take your time. Whether you are redesigning the entire room or you are just choosing a new teen comforter set, do not expect that in an hour or two you will find something that suits you, your teen and your budget. Make a few shopping trips and spread them out over a few days or a couple of weeks. Feeling rushed or spending too many hours shopping can put both of you on edge and makes a fun project a chore.

5. Have fun. This is a great way to interact with your teen in a positive way. Enjoy the planning, the shopping and the acquisitions. This is a way to get to know your maturing teen better while supporting them and their unique sense of style. Watch design shows, consult books together and laugh about your differences.

Buying a comforter set for your teen does not have to be a chore. Involve your teen, discuss options and shop together for a look that suits your teen’s growing tastes and does not completely cause you offense. Allowing your teen some freedom of choice can turn teen angst into teen style.
