Are you struggling with your growing child and their

When I was little, I had minimal input into the look of
my room. My mom purchased and I accepted. This didn’t
change until high school when I was almost out of the
house. However my 9 year old niece has been helping
choose her bedroom decor ever since she could verbalize
her opinions. She has grown out of her Power Puff Girls
phase and into a more girly and less character oriented
taste. So, when considering what comforter set your
particular girl may prefer, it might not be a bad idea
to go to the source and ask. However, that does not mean
that because she wants an exorbitantly priced comforter
set that you need to buy it for her; it is simply a
recommendation so that you can negotiate something that
suits your budget and her tastes.
Character Sets
Character sets are abundant in everything from baby
bedding and toddler sets to full size comforter sets for
girls. These sets usually work best for toddlers and
younger girls since they are most likely to want their
favorite character on their sheets, comforter, pillows
etc. These sets are also readily available at most
department and discount stores. The prices are usually
reasonable, under $100, and the quality can range from
quite poor to quite good.
Girly Sets
Girl comforter sets also come in some feminine patterns
and colors. Many are bubble gum pink with butterflies,
flowers or even a shoe or shopping theme. These sets
have a distinctly girly feel and are often plush and
maybe even ruffled. Usually they are displayed with lots
of toss pillows or shag rugs in matching hues. This set
may actually appeal longer to the young miss than the
more faddish character sets. Sets in this category can
range greatly from under $50 to more than a couple of
hundred dollars. The quality also has quite a range from
scratchy screen printed fabrics to velvets, satins and
high quality cotton and silks. Choose what works best
for you, and always read the care labels. A dry clean
only set may not be worth the trouble.
Sporty Sets
If characters have lost their appeal and girly just
isn’t her style but she loves sports, there are more and
more sporty sets available. Do not let yourself get
stuck in a gender rut if what she really wants on her
bed is the local sports team emblem. If you really want
her room to look more feminine use more feminine
accessories in matching colors and go ahead and get
sporty.
Crafty
If you or someone readily available is talented with
sewing or crafts you could always create a girl
comforter set. Choose a plain comforter or duvet cover
in a color that is basic but appealing. Then depending
on her age and her skill and yours decorate with fabric
paints, dyes or appliques. Dip dying is popular now;
this is where one end is saturated with color and the
other end just barely has a hint of hue. Fabric paints
can be easier to use and make customization easy.
If you choose to sew bows, ribbons, buttons or other
items onto a comforter make sure they are not a choking
hazard to any young children and that they are properly
secured. A sewing machine would probably be best when
adding decorations to the comforter or duvet.
The process of choosing or creating a comforter set for
your girl can create fond memories. Involving the child
in the decision not only helps avoid an argument but
also teaches decision making skills and allows
self-expression. Take your time choosing your girl
comforter set and remember that fashion can be fun.
