Luxury Comforter
Make a Luxury Comforter
You may want to make your own luxury comforter, but it
seems a daunting task. Relax, because there is an easy
way you can make your own luxury comforter without
having to hold a sewing bee.
You can make a puff pillow patchwork luxury comforter
using bright scraps of patchwork fabric and cushion
stuffing.
First decide on your color scheme. Your comforter should
harmonize with your bedroom so pick shades and tones
that go well with your present color scheme. You can
pick out one color, such as blue, and plan your
comforter around the many shades of blue, using both
plain and patterned fabrics to create a pleasing design.
Next choose your fabrics. You will be cutting the fabric
into squares about the size of a CD cover, so you will
be able to pick designs that might not be suitable for
smaller patchwork pieces, such as large checks, large
florals and novelty designs. You may already have a
stash of fabric pieces and off cuts from which to
choose, but make sure they harmonize with your design
vision. Try mix and matching various fabrics – velvets,
satins and voiles work well together and make a real
luxury comforter.
Now cut out your squares of fabric. You will be making
little pillows, so to start with you will stitch two
fabric squares together on three sides only, leaving an
opening for the stuffing.
You can sew matching pieces of fabric for the little
pillows but it is more exciting if you choose different
patterns on each side for your pillows. Then when you
turn the quilt over, it has a different design from the
other side.
Making the little pillows can be quickly done on a
sewing machine, or, if you don’t have one, you can hand
sew them while relaxing and watching TV in the evenings.
Stack up your little pillow cases as you complete each
one, remembering to leave one side open for the
stuffing.
When you have made enough little pillow cases for your
luxury comforter, stuff each one with quilt wadding and
sew up the open side. Now you will have a growing stack
of soft, cushiony little square pillows.
When all the pillows are stuffed, sew them together in
strips as wide as you want the comforter to be, and sew
the strips together until the comforter is complete.
This luxury comforter will become a family heirloom so
it is worth adding some extra special touches. Try
making the little pillows out of heirloom fabrics around
your home, such as old party dresses, wedding dresses
and so on.
If you are using plain fabric for the pillows, get your
family and friends to draw a picture or write a message
on some of them with fabric paints or markers. If there
are a lot of small children in your family, have a hand
print day, with each child stamping their hand print on
the pillows with fabric paint.
Another way to make your comforter special is to print
out family photos on your home printer, using transfers,
and transferring the images to your fabric squares.
However you do it, you will find that adding your own
creative touch to your bedroom with a hand made luxury
comforter is easier than you think!
