Washing Instructions for a Down Comforter
A new down comforter for your bed is a financial
investment in your comfort, and like any other
investment, you should give it proper protection and
care to prolong its life and keep it in good condition.
One of the most important parts of keeping your
comforter in good shape is knowing how to protect it
from dirt and how to clean it if it does become dirty.
You may have washing instructions for your down
comforter, and if so, you should follow them to avoid
damaging the fabric or down of your new comforter. If,
however, your down comforter is a plain, white down
comforter that's sometimes called a duvet or featherbed,
there are some basic washing instructions for a down
comforter that you can follow.
The most important washing instructions are NOT to wash
your down comforter frequently. Most experts recommend
once or twice a year as the most frequently that a down
comforter should actually be washed. In between times,
you can keep it fresh by shaking it out frequently and
hanging it out to air in the fresh air a couple of times
a month.
When you are ready to wash your down comforter - perhaps
because of a spill, or because it's just time to give it
a thorough freshening and cleaning, these are the basic
washing instructions you should follow to avoid damaging
your comforter.
1. If your washing machine is small, take your comforter
to the Laundromat and use one of the large capacity
washers. The more room your comforter has to move around
in the water, the less clumping of down you'll have to
unclump later.
2. Wash your down comforter in cold water for best
results. Hot water tends to set stains, particularly
those that arise from bodily oils.
3. When washing your down comforter, use a mild
detergent with a degreaser, and follow the instructions
for 'delicate' fabrics.
4. Run the washing machine through the spin cycle two to
three times to remove as much water as possible before
taking your down comforter out to dry.
5. Optional but recommended: Lay your comforter outside
to start drying. Use your hands to start working out the
clumps of down as you spread it on the ground or between
two benches. Be sure to protect your down comforter with
a top sheet laid out beneath it.
6. Dry on low heat in the dryer, with a clean tennis
shoe thrown in with the comforter to help 'beat' out the
remaining clumps of down and fluff it up.
7. Remove the down comforter from the dryer and give it
a good shakeout before you lay it out on the bed. You
can use your fingers to separate any few remaining
clumps, though there shouldn't be many.
That's all there is to it. If you care for your down
comforter, and follow the washing instructions to avoid
doing any damage to the fabric, stitching or filling of
your down comforter, you'll find that it gives you years
of comfort and warmth with really very little effort on
your part.
