White Goose Down Comforter
A White Goose Down Comforter For All Seasons
When I was in college, one of my best friends worked at
a home goods store. For a long time I had wanted a down
comforter for my bed. When the store went out of
business, she got me one for a fraction of what I would
have paid. The only problem is that it was a white goose
down comforter, and I am a little bit clumsy. Obviously,
I decided I would need to figure out a way to cover the
blanket in order to use it. I found a use for each
season, and a way to affordably (I was in college after
all) make my white goose down comforter usable.
Spring: I got the white goose down comforter in the
spring time, and it was beginning to get warm out, so I
primarily used it as a decorative accent in it’s first
months. I found a king sized flat sheet that I liked and
safety pinned the edges of it to the bottom of the white
goose down comforter so that when I removed it from the
bed each night, the two pieces still stayed together so
that I could make the bed in the morning, since I was
not using the bedspread as a blanket.
Summer: During the summer months, I had a lighter weight
blanket on my bed and the white goose down comforter
seemed a bit excessive. It was so soft though, and I
decided to try putting it on the top of the bed,
underneath the fitted sheet, as a pillow top to the
mattress. It worked really well, and even though I had
to make the bed a little bit more often, it was well
worth the good night’s sleep that I got when I slept on
the white goose down comforter.
Fall: In the fall, I decided that I really wanted a
duvet cover for my white goose down comforter, but I
knew that they were very expensive, so I found a
material that I liked, and used my mother’s sewing
machine to essentially make a giant pocket out of the
material that was cut to fit the white goose down
comforter. I made button holes at the top of the cover,
and found buttons that I really liked to add as accents.
It worked out very well, and was much more personal than
any duvet cover that I could have bought at a store.
Winter: Even though the duvet cover that I had made
would have easily worked in the winter too, I like
switching things up, so I wanted to change the look of
my room a little bit. I did not, however, want to make
another duvet cover for my white goose down comforter. I
did have a tapestry that I really liked, that covered
the whole bed. Unlike in the spring, I didn’t have to
safety pin the tapestry to the white goose down
comforter because I wasn’t removing it from the bed
every night. That is, until it started getting warm
again, and me and my white goose down comforter began
our second year together.
