Make A White Duvet Cover
How To Make A White Duvet Cover
So you’ve finally broken down and bought that goose down
comforter that you have been eyeing for the last couple
of winters, and now you have decided that in order to
protect the white fabric, you want to get a duvet cover.
You like the white comforter, but need something more
washable, so you have come to the conclusion that what
you need is a white duvet cover.
Duvet covers, as it turns out, are fairly easy to make.
If you don’t have access to a sewing machine, it can be
a long process, and if you do have access to a sewing
machine, but have not had a lot of practice with it, I
would recommend some practice with smaller pieces of
material before embarking on your white duvet cover.
You will need to gather or purchase a couple of things
before you begin making your white duvet cover. First,
and perhaps most obviously, you will need to get enough
white material to cover your down comforter on both
sides. You can either purchase the material and then cut
it into two different sizes, or you can purchase two
sheets that are on size larger than your comforter. Make
sure that if you get the material and cut it to size,
that you leave some extra space for seams. You will also
need white thread (it sounds obvious, but you’d be
surprised how easy it is to forget the little things),
buttons, and access to a sewing machine.
The first step after you cut the material to size is to
hem one side of each piece of the material. On the other
three sides, you are going to sew all around the edges.
Make sure that all of the seams (including the hemming)
is on the inside. Turn the white duvet cover right side
out when you are finished sewing.
The final step is to make button holes and attach
buttons to your white duvet cover. The way to do this is
to run a stitch about an inch long, and then run it back
long itself, then you take a razor or seam ripper and
cut open the middle of the stitch. This way your button
hole will not fray. Lastly, securely fasten your buttons
along the top of the white duvet cover. Make sure the
buttons and their holes line up. You can now put your
comforter inside your finished white duvet cover.
If you’d like, you can add detailing to the cover with
fabric paints or with embroidery, if you are
artistically inclined. It is easy to do, and since you
made the white duvet cover yourself, it is nice to
personalize it (and not as expensive if you mess it up).
Of course, if you find this whole process a little bit
too daunting, you can always buy a white duvet cover at
your local department store, or online. Either way,
using a white duvet cover to protect you down comforter
is a good plan, since it is much easier to wash than the
comforter itself.
